We would need to buy enough staff to be able to work remotely. We would also need to personally have a stash of food to survive a month at home without going out.
We then set about buying enough devices for most of the staff at S&S to work from home. People thought we were crazy. We bought only the minimum devices. They scoffed, said we were being overly dramatic and it wasn't an issue. I was lucky to have a good IT uni student who helped and we spent the next month getting the devices and thinking through remote working at S&S would look like.
That week, we went out and bought a trolley load of basics. Nothing too crazy and hoarding - but enough food to survive for a month. We have tuna, pasta, long life milk, bread mix, chocolate easter eggs, salsa, tinned veggies, biscuits, museli bars, garbage bags etc. It was hard to know what to get- so we added as we went. Panadol one week, ladies products the next, then ribena.
Mum and Dad, Pete and Kristen did the same. We told the kids not to tell anyone as it looked like we were being silly.
A month later- and it started dawning on people that we might have a problem and the supermarkets were emptied out straight away. People went crazy and bought hundreds of rolls of toilet paper, all the paper, flour and rice. It was quite silly how crazy people could get over toilet paper and the sheer greed of some people buying crazy amounts of toilet paper when others had non.
Things in Italy, China and Iran were bad. The private schools decided that anyone coming back from China had to self-isolate for two weeks before returning to school. Some kids missed the first week of school. There were over 80 girls missing from Kate and Hollys school due to the isolation.
For us, February continued as normal. We went camping with the O'sullivans and Barons, watched Ed play waterpolo and had a movie night with Kate's friends.
Little did we know (actually as we write this- we have no idea about what is in store)
