COVID Week 4. April 5-11

As we started our 4th week of pandemic lock down our minds were turned to Easter.  It was the oddest lead up to Easter ever, but it made us stop and really think about Easter.  We decided that we were going to look into the various different celebrations connected with Easter.  Each of us had a day to think through what that day held.  We looked at Shrove Tuesday, Ash Wednesday, Maundy Thursday, Good Friday and Easter Day.  This entry will detail some of the things we did or thought about for each of those days.  But first, our life also went on
We started the week on Palm Sunday by "going" to church on our couch.  While it is nothing like actually going to church, it has been great to be able to immediately reflect on what we have learnt with each other.  We then started to plan how we would survive the week.  Apparently there was heaps to do.

Lockdown means we had to be deliberate about a few things, things like food, exercise and fun.  When it comes to food we prepared homemade custard and poached peaches, Holly made hotcross buns and of course we needed to have our Easter cheeses and drinkies.  For exercise it was runs around the block, gym sessions and walking the dog.  As for fun it was dying our hair, making our own art and craft projects and puzzles.

We also started a bit of a challenge with The Semples who lives just on the next street.  We traded pictures of ourselves outside each others houses, messages in chalk, then they made paper chain caterpillars that "invaded" our front yard.  We then made some birds (paper cranes) that "ate" the caterpillars and invaded their front yard, and then these well fed cats turned up on our door step.  It has been fun for us all.
We are also doing our weekly online fun shop.  We got our package from Peters of Kensington this week that had light up letters and mugs, as well as fancy glasses for Ed.

We also took a buzzfeed to work out what Winnie the Pooh characters we all are. Dad is Christopher Robin.
There were strict isolation rules imposed, but it was important to stay connected.  We were also isolated from Grandma/Granddad and Margaret/David.  We decided to make this a package of food to feel a little closer.  There were tight restrictions on travel so we had to check on whether we could drive there or not.  We were allowed to becasue we were caring for "vulnerable" people.  It was fun to make it and take it to them.  We also had a Layson Clan zoom catch up which was fun.

As we got closer to Easter we started our remembrance of Jesus

SHROVE TUESDAY
Shrove tuseday is also called pancakeday so Ed made pancakes to start our first day of easter celebrations. Shrove tuseday is a day before people fast that is why you have pancakes so you get to enjoy the good things in life like chocolate ect before Ash Wednesday (some people in this house didn't apretiate the chefs creations).

ASH WEDNESDAY
Ash Wednesday is usually remembered and practiced to reflect and repent before easter. On this day  people spend the day fasting and praying while repenting their sins. On this day, we fasted by not eating dairy, meats, butter, eggs, oil and wine whicg proved a difficult challenge for many in our family, *cough cough, cheese is a dairy*. We ate veggie wraps for lunch and pumpkin soup for dinner. At dinner the reverened of the house MARKed, hahahaha get it, our foreheads with an ash cross, a traditional way of reflecting on the day and remembering.

MAUNDY THURSDAY
Maundy Thursday is s day of commemoration of Jesus Christ's institution of the Eucharist during the Last Supper. It also commemorates the practice of ceremonial foot washing. We celbrated Maundy Thursday by participating in our own smaller version of the Last Supper/Passover meal. We made the traditional foods and we did it in the order that was done at the passover. except ours didn't last the traditional 3-4 hours

GOOD FRIDAY
On Good Friday we remember the death of Jesus on the cross.  Traditonally people eat fish (as they give up meat) and fast and reflect on Jesus.  For dinner we made fish shaped salmon parcels.
