2.12.1 Le Grand Baloon

This was my last chance to try the hills in the Vosges Mountains. I looked up last night and researched the highest peak in the region and discovered "Le Grand Baloon" was the highest peak in the Vosges at about 1400 m.  So that was on the ticket.  I drove to Munster (home of the stinky cheese called Munster) to avoid traffic and the flat lands.

I started cycling about 7am, which the local consider to be horrendously early.  There was no cyclist and very little traffic as I ascended a climb that claimed to rise about 670m in 7.1km, however the total ascent, including the warm up slopes was about 850, and then another 150m or so to get to Le Grand Baloon.  I headed back the long way along a fantastic mountain road that went up and down between 1100 and 1200 metres above sea level.

It was a road that joined many of the alpine ski fields of the region and had stunning views down to the lakes and towns in the valley.  If I had more time I would love to explore every hill here.

The alpine road met the road descending back in Munster at Col de la Schlucht.  The decent was fast, smooth and amazing.
I drove back into Colmar and then got onto the bike to meet Sal and the kids.  A hot, flat and slow 20km, but lots of fun with them all.  With all the sun I have got my tan lines back, and so does Holly.  Snap!  I couldn't be prouder!

The next ride is down in the Alps.  Can't wait.
