2.6 summertime in Belgium

Today we had a late start. We woke up to the sound of rain pattering against the windows. We have heard it was 15 degrees in Sydney and everyone was cold. Well it was 16 degrees and rainy here in the middle of summer.

After a late breakfast of waffles and special k, mum went out shopping while we stayed in bed and watched the lion, the witch and the wardrobe. After a while went went and joined mum at the shops for the massive sale. Mum, excited by the sale, spent about $200 buying me some skirts, Holly some shirts and mum bought a full suit. Dad and Ed, were bored and went out on a shopping expedition of their own and Ed got a shirt and some shorts.
While Ed and dad were out, they went to a boulangerie, patisserie and got some baguettes and a fraise (strawberry) tart. After a lunch of sausages and salad, we went out to a museum. The museum was a war museum that was built around a fort that was destroyed by the Germans in the First World War. It was intriguing to see what life in the fort. The fort was called Fort De loncin and was  last point of resistance to the Germans on their march to France in 1914.  It was here the Germans unleashed their secret weapon, "big Bertha." It was a 200 tonne, 420mm canon that took 200 men to move and shot a 800kg canon.  The Belgians never knew what hit them. We walked around the crater that one shell created.  The tour had headphone sets with sounds that were from the First World War, we walked through the parts of the fort that we still there. In one part the noises of bombs exploding was just too scary for the kids.  But is all lead to some interesting conversations about war and why people fight them.

When we came back home, dad sat straight on the couch to watch the tour and we started on our signs to take to the tour tomorrow.

Finally, a Belgium dinner. The meals are massively oversized here and even though we ordered 3, we could not finish them.
