Last swim in the peaceful Italian countryside before the craziness of Rome.
After a short 2 hour drive still singing songs from Pitch Perfect, we found our hotel easily without having to fight the Rome traffic or any of those crazy roundabouts.
Sal thought it would be a good idea to give Ed Phenergan before the car trip so that he would not get car sick. The good news is that he did not get sick. The bad news is that he was very sleepy all day and we had to buy him a bottle of Coke to perk him up!
We are staying in a friendly but basic B&B in the university district. We have one large room with a single and 2 double beds and a bathroom with an eclectic shared kitchen. Phew! It has airconditioning.
As soon as we had settled we went off to see the Coleseum by foot. After 500m we were lost and suffering under the 35* temperature. Nothing that a short stop at a caffe with caffeine couldn't fix.
2km later and we were still walking and were yet to see the famous landmarks.. So we stopped for Gelato. 2€ for gelato. We are trying to have a different flavour each time so it looks like no chocolate for the rest of the holiday.
Finally we made it to the Coleseum. The queues were moderate and the heat still blazing but just being there imagining what it would have been like 2000 years ago is not something we will forget.
We bought some great kids books about gladiators and Roman buildings and Kate studied them straight away and was our instant tour guide/ expert. On the walk up to Trajans column Kate spotted some ruins from her book and it was great to see the ruins in real life.
Coming home was tricky as the trams had been magically replaced by buses with no notices or messages to inform us. We all squeezed into the bus at temperatures over 35* and it was not a pleasant experience.
Back home to have a shower and then out for dinner.
There are so many pizzerias and ristorante near where we are staying. Holly had her heart set on lasagne so we had to find one that had them. Ed is fixated on Magerita pizzas but we were able to convince him to have ravioli. Sal asked the owner "Jenny" what she recommended and ordered the "grilled unfermented cheese with vegetables". All dishes where yummy and under 8€ each. So good after last nights meal.
As we are all sharing a big room, we are hoping that we have tired the kids out and they fall asleep soon.
