Day 23: Alpe d’Huez

When we first talked about this trip it was suggested that Sally could/would/should ride Alpe d’Huez. We are not sure whose suggestion it was, but Sally was sure that if she did ride the mountain, it would not be on an e-bike! When Mark was discussing the trip, and Sally riding the Alpe, a few friends were sceptical of Sally’s ability to get to the top. Mark was less sceptical, and Sally did a good amount of training before coming over. Today was the day to see if the doubters or true believers were right.
When we got to the town of Le Bourg d’Oisans early in the morning the doubts were there because the mountains are so close and imposing. It was only 12 degrees when we hit town and got ready to go.
The climb starts with a few kilometres of 10% gradients, and the start of 21 hair pin turns. We decided to take all the time we needed to get to the top. There were so many people climbing the mountain as the tour comes up it tomorrow. There were all kinds of people climbing, including a 65 year old (he laboured that point) one legged man! What a champ!
The scenery into the valley is amazing, and the crowd that were already on the mountain were incredible.

The photo below was of some Swiss guys playing “Rd Hot Chilli Peppers” and cheering everyone.
As well as the adventure of it all it was actually a very emotional experience. I (Mark) shed a tear or two on the way up and at the top. I reflected on the past 7 years of health issues, and that in some ways I am lucky to be alive, let alone cycle the hill. Not only that, Sally and I got to do it together. WOW!
Also as well ascended, there was so much painting of names on the road. We stopped briefly at one hairpin turn for a drink, and saw some special writing in the road. When in the UK, Sarah told us about how the red robin is known as a symbol of the presence of a lost loved one. Sal’s dad, Robin, would be so proud of what Sally achieved today, and the sign on the road seemed to confirm this. It was very affirming.
We reached the top, with all of our training paying off.
A quick coffee and then for the scary descent back into town. Again, WOW!
The town was a buzz with cycling action.

We then made our way to our accomodation about 25 minutes away. And again, WOW! A tiny chalet with a massive view.
An amazing day that we are both so thankful for.
